Before the mission trip started my Mom wanted me to go saying “It’s good for you it’ll make you come closer to God”. At first I was skeptical and didn’t have any motivation to go. (금년초 저의 어머니는 “너한테좋을거야, 하나님과더 가까와 질수 있어” 하며 제가 선교여행가기를 원하셨습니다. 저는 처음에는 의심 되기도하고 가야겠다는 동기가 전혀 없었습니다.)
Plus when my Mom said it was full of Doctors that made it worse, because I felt like I have nothing to do there and I would just waste people’s time. This went on for about a week. Finally my oldest sister talked to me and said that I should just go because the worst that can happen was that I wouldn’t like it. (게다가 어머니가 여러 의사들이 간다고 하실때는 더더구나 갈 생각이 없어진 것은, 내가 가야 할 일도 없고 여러사람 시간만 낭비시키겠구나 해서입니다. 이런 승강이는 일주일을 계속되었습니다. 마침내, 큰누나가강하게 말하기를 “가보아라, 최악의 경우 페루에 가보니 별루 좋은것도 없네 하면 되쟎아” 했습니다)
It was true the worst that could happen was I didn’t like it or it was too cold. So finally I told my Mom yes I’ll go to Peru. (그렇지, 최악 이래봤자 내가 그 곳이 싫거나 또는 너무 춥거나하는 정도겠지 생각되었습니다. 그래서 결국 어머니께 페루에 가겠다고 했습니다.)
During the meetings it was hard to understand sometimes, because I’m bad at Korean. But, during the meetings I got to know what I was going to do in Peru. I was going to help out with the VBS for the little kids. Preparing for some of the Spanish praises was really fun but very difficult, because it was in another language. (선교준비 팀모임때는 제가 한국말이 짧아, 종종 알아듣기 힘들기도 했습니다. 하지만 미팅을 해가면서 점차 제가 페루에서 무엇을 할지 알게되었습니다. 어린아이들을 위한 VBS를 도울 일을요. 몇가지 스패니쉬찬양을 연습하는일은 정말 재밋었지만 또한 외국어라 매우 어려웠습니다.)
The first day after arriving in Peru, we rode a city bus to the church. There we walked around the local market and just by walking you couldn’t tell there was poverty there. In the afternoon, we went on a 3 hour drive to Chincha and stayed on a motel with a supermarket right across the street. At this point Peru was not what I expected, even though I kind of had an idea when I first arrived in Peru because friends that went on the mission trip last year told me what to expect. (페루에도착 첫째날, 우리는시내 뻐스를 타고 교회로 향했습니다. 가는길에 동네 가게며 노점상들을 보며 별로 가난해 보이지는 않았습니다. 오후에 약 3시간 드라이브하여 친차에 도착, 길건너에수퍼마켓이 있는 모텔에 들었습니다. 그때까지만 해도 제가 예상했던 페루의 모습은 아니었습니다. 작년에 페루에 다녀왔던 친구들한테 들은바가 있었거든요.)
Next day, we headed to a local church to do the medical mission and the VBS team would teach the children about how Jesus washed away our sins by dying on the cross with fun activities. It was a 2 story building with a tarp for the roof. After getting all the tables and chairs set up some of the kids already came 2 hours earlier than expected. We did the arts and crafts with the few kids that were there. (다음날, 우리는 의료사역과 VBS 사역, 준비한 재미있는 놀이를 통해 어텋게 예수님이 십자가에 돌아가심으로 우리의 죄가 씻겨졌는가를 아이들에게 전하고자 지역 페루인 교회로 갔습니다. 비닐같은 탈프로 지붕을한 이층 건물이었습니다. 의자며 테이블을 세팅하는 동안 몇몇 어린이들이 두시간도 전에 벌써 모였습니다. 이 아이들과 몇가지 놀이와 공작을 했습니다.)
After lunch, half the mission team members went out to the neighborhood to ask people to come to the church for free medical attention and VBS for children. At first when we were walking, I noticed that there were some nice houses with high walls, but soon as we walked you could see the poverty-stricken neighborhood. (점심후 팀원 반 정도가 근처 동네로 나가 사람들에게 무료진료와 어린이 프로그램을 알리고 초청을 하였습니다. 주변을 다니며 보니, 높은 담벽의 좋은 집들도 눈에 띄었습니다. 하지만, 조금 더가니 금방 가난에 쩌들은 이웃들이 보였습니다.)
There were dirt roads, small run-down shack like houses and stray dogs almost everywhere we looked. You could just tell how poor these people are easily. This really opened my eyes on what was happening in the world. It wasn’t like what you see on TV and I was there feeling helpless. (비포장 흙먼지 길에, 지저분하고 보잘것 없는 조그만 집들, 어디가나 많은 마른 개들이 돌아 다녔습니다. 이들이 얼마나 가난한지 쉽게 알수 있었습니다. 이 세상이 어떻게 돌아가고 있는지 저의 눈을 뜨게하는 경험이었습니다. 전혀 TV에서 보는바와 달랐고 저는 순간 무력감을 느꼈습니다.)
We had a good number of children for just going door to door asking if they would like to come. I was surprised on how many children came. It was hard for the VBS team, because of the language barrier. When the children asked us something we would have to go to someone that did know Spanish and English to translate what they said. (초청에 응한 꽤 많은 어린이들이 모아져 저는 놀랐습니다. 언어때문에 쉽지는 않았습니다. 페루 어린이들이 뭔가 말을걸면, 누군가 스패니쉬에서 영어로 통역해 줄수있는 사람을 찾아야만 했습니다.)
Most of the children that came to VBS were young and sometimes there were teenagers but not that many. The next day we went to a town called Nuevo Canete. It was basically a big desert-like open field with some dirt mountains. Since they rarely get rain and short of water, it was hard to find any plant or even a single grass on the ground. After VBS, we took the kids outside to play soccer and they loved it. (VBS에 온 아이들 대부분은 어린 아이들이었고 간혹 틴에이져 들도 있었습니다. 다음날은 누에보 까네떼란 지역으로 이동하였습니다. 커다란 사막 같은 황량한 마을로 흙으로된 동산도 있었습니다. 비가 거의 안오고 물이 귀해 나무나 화초가 드물고 흙동산에는 풀 한포기 없었습니다. VBS후에 아희들을 밖으로 데리고 나와 축구경기를 하니 매우 즐거워 했습니다.)
We came back to Lima church, and there we had more help from church members, youth groups and missionaries daughters Sharim and Yire with translation. While walking in the neighborhood we passed out invitation flyers. For the 2 day VBS, we did praise with motion, arts and crafts, games, bible verses, a magic show, Taekwondo and K-pop demonstration and a skit. On the last day morning, Hong Sunkyosanim took us to the Inca Market to buy some souvenirs and it was fun and enjoyable because you could bargain at the store. (리마교회로 돌아오니, 현지 교인들, 청년들, 또 선교사님들 딸 샤림과 이레로 부터 좀더 많은 통역의 도움을 받을수 있었습니다. 교회 이웃을 돌며 초청장을 돌렸습니다. 이틀 연속된 VBS에서 우리는 찬양과 율동, 공작품만들기, 게임, 성경구절, 매직쇼, 태권무와 K-POP 시범, 연극등을 하였습니다. 마지막날아침, 홍 선교사님이 우리를 Inca Market 으로 데리고가 구경하며 기념품도 사며 즐거운 시간을 가졌고 특히 흥정을 할 수있어 재미 있었습니다.)
That final night, we had a revival service at the community center, for which our mission team prepared and practiced very hard. Together with the brothers and sisters in Peru, we wanted to give thanks and praise God. It lasted for about 2 hours. Although it was raining and we didn’t have a roof but temporary tent, it was a beautiful service. The mission team did Spanish praises for 7 songs while the Peru praising team did 4 songs. (그날밤, 마지막으로 마을회관에서 우리팀이무척이나 열심히 준비하고 연습한 부흥집회를 했습니다. 우리는 페루의 형제 자매들과 함께 하나님께 감사와 찬양 드리고 싶었습니다. 집회는 대략 두시간정도 연속되었습니다. 부슬비는 오고 지붕도 없는 회관 마당에 임시 천막을 치고 비에 젖기는 해도 아름다운 예배였습니다. 우리 찬양팀이 일곱개의 스패니쉬 찬양을 하고 페루 찬양팀이 4곡을 하였습니다.)
We performed Taekwondo, Peru friends did a skit and together we sang and danced to the praising song. Everybody was so moved and sang together in loud voices. After service we said our good bye to the people that we met there and became good friends with and headed to the airport. (우리는 태권도 시범을 하고 페루 청년 친구들은 무언극을 하였습니다. 우리 모두는 함께 같이 연습한 찬양을 부르고 춤추었습니다. 모두가 찬양과 경배에 감동되어 큰소리로 노래하였습니다. 집회가 끝나고, 좋은 친구가 된 그곳에서 만난 사람들과 작별인사를하고 공항으로 향했습니다.)
My thoughts after the mission trip was that it showed me God’s love and grace will appear where it is needed most. Sometimes during the mission trip, I felt myself useless because I couldn’t help the people in need. But, I realized that God loves these people very much. Looking at their problems and comparing them to mine made all of my problems seem like nothing compared to theirs. (이번 선교여행후 드는 생각은 하나님의 사랑과 은혜는 가장 필요로 하는곳에 함께 하신다는 것입니다. 선교여행 동안 문뜩 문뜩 필요가 있는 이들을 도울 수 없는 제자신이 쓸모없다고 느끼곤 했습니다. 그러나, 하나님께서 이 사람들을 몹시 사랑하신다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 그들의 문제를 내 문제와 비교해보니 제 문제는 아무것도 아님을 알았습니다.)
For my first Mission Trip it was a good experience because I went with a SBC mission team who mostly didn’t know who I was and I didn’t know most of them. I think that if I went with youth would have ruined the purpose of the mission trip to me. This makes me want to go on more mission trips in the future. Thank you. (저의 첫 선교여행으로 서로 잘 모르던 서울교회 어른 선교팀과 함께간 것이 좋은 경험이 된 것 같습니다. Youth 구릎팀과 갔더라면 제가 선교여행의 본분을 잊고오지 않았을까 생각합니다. 이번 여행으로 인해 앞으로도 또선교여행을 가고싶은 마음이 생겼습니다. 감사합니다.)
